Currently, the flower is popular among gardeners and decorates flower beds, mixbord, hedges. Low-growing varieties look beautiful on window sills. The most convenient way to get cosmey is to grow from seeds. All varieties of it multiply in this way. Obtained in the first way, the cosmea will bloom in early summer, and in the second, it will blossom later.

Growing cosmey from seeds

Propagate the flower with seeds immediately in the open ground or grow seedlings. Planting directly in the soil is made in the spring, after warming up, in early May. Varieties for this method are chosen simple, the most common, early flowering, for example, Sensation. The second method consists in sowing seeds in late autumn, when frost sets in, then cover them with snow.

A flower is capable of propagating by self-seeding. At the same time, if different varieties grow nearby, they can become pollinated and next season the flower will be of a different color. As well as terry hybrids, they may not convey the characteristic features of this type.

Growing from seedlings by seedlings will allow you to get earlier flowering. Selection hybrids are selected for this. Sow in March or April.

Cosmea seed selection for sowing

Seeds of a variety you like can be bought or collected after flowering at the site. It is usually in the early fall. So that they do not get enough sleep on the ground, they wrap gauze with the largest inflorescences. They are waiting for the grains to darken, tear, and dry in a well-ventilated room. Then they are collected, stored in a cloth bag or box, and seeds can be sown for 3-4 years.

The technology of growing seedlings from seeds

Seedling method is used for earlier flowering or predefined landscape ideas:

  • The soil for seedlings is preferably loose, light. It can be bought or cooked at home - fertile soil, combined with sand 1: 1 with the addition of humus and compost.
  • At home, the earth is disinfected in the oven, for a couple of half an hour, then loosened, moistened.
  • Seeds do not need stratification, they have good germination. They are only disinfected in a weak solution of manganese.
  • Till the soil and sprinkle the seeds with a distance of 9-10 cm into the prepared boxes, place 2-3 seeds in separate cups, do not sprinkle it, just spray it, put glass on top or cover with a film.
  • The place is chosen sunny - south, southwest windowsill.
  • The necessary temperature for germination is + 18 ... +20 ° С.
  • Regularly ventilate, moisturize as needed.
  • After germination, after 1-2 weeks, the film is removed and the temperature is lowered to + 16 ... +18 ° C so that they do not stretch. The room should be sunny, with a lack of light use photolamps. If the seedlings sprout too densely, they are cut through to a distance of 10-15 cm or dive.

Seedling Care

Seedlings are moderately watered with soft, settled water. After 2-2.5 weeks, they are fed with a complex mixture for flowering plants. After the appearance of the first pair of leaves, seedlings dive into separate containers. When 7-8 sheets are formed, the top of the stem is removed. This procedure is required to grow lateral shoots and increase the number of buds.

Two weeks before planting on the flowerbed, future flowers are hardened. They keep the street, balcony, at first for 10-15 minutes, gradually increasing the time. With this method, cosmea blooms in June.

In open ground, seedlings are placed in mid-May, when the threat of night frost passes. Landing small pits are prepared in 2-3 days in a sunny place. Plants are planted at a distance of 30 cm for low hybrids and 40-50 cm for tall ones. The day before watering and transferring plants in the evening. Each is placed, sprinkled, slightly compacted, watered. In order for the cosmea to bloom intensively, pinch the tops when the plant reaches 50 cm.

For landscape design, this method of growing has advantages - each flower is placed in its place. Tall varieties are immediately supported.

The soil should be of low acidity, drained and moderately fertile, otherwise the cosmea will grow in length and will not bloom profusely. With this method, the plant blooms in early summer.

Preparation and sowing of seeds in open ground

Cosmea seeds are small, elongated. In one gram there are 200 pieces. The place is chosen sunny, with fertile, drained soil, protected from the cold wind, suitable near the fence, you can use the plant as a hedge. The soil before planting is prepared as follows - they are drained too tight with sand, wood shavings, then they are loosened and fed with organic fertilizer, moistened.

Distribute 3-4 pieces, at a distance of 3-4 cm. Close up into the soil by 10 mm. Seedlings wait in 2-3 weeks. The temperature on the street should be + 12 ... +15 ° С. When the seedlings reach 5 cm, cut through. The cosmea grown in this way in July-August blooms.

Sow in two ways - nest or solid. Shallow pits are made on a flat bed (not more than 1 cm) and seeds are placed at a distance of 30 cm for 3-4 pieces. Fall asleep in a thin layer. You can sprinkle seeds without holes. Then moisturize from a spray bottle. After emergence, seedlings need to be thinned. Leave strong and strong shoots, remove weak ones.
